Homework
1-2 hours per week. After each session, we will send the assignments for the week to the parent's email via the Outschool Messaging system. This will usually include a few songs and exercises to practice, along with some specific notes on what to focus on. Learners will progress at different paces based on how often they practice. We typically recommend practicing 3-4 times a week, for 10 minutes a day for kids 8 and under, and 20 minutes a day for kids 9+. Older teens may be willing to invest even more time, but consistency is better than one long practice session once a week!

Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Join Mr. Nathan for Saxophone Lessons!

Whether you’re interested in alto, tenor, or baritone saxophone, this class will introduce the basics of playing saxophone, including understanding the instrument’s structure, using good posture and breath control, and learning proper finger placement on the keys. There will also be a time to ask any questions about what ongoing saxophone lessons with Mr. Nathan would look like.

If you choose to sign up for regular lessons, here’s what to expect!

These one-on-one sessions, scheduled weekly or biweekly, are taught by Mr. Nathan and tailored to help you or your child develop saxophone skills from the ground up. We’ll start with foundational music theory and progress through songs of increasing difficulty until you’re confidently playing on your own!

Our lessons are engaging and interactive, incorporating a mix of songs, music theory activities, and educational games. We use structured methods suited to young beginners, but as you grow confident, we can also explore additional pieces of your choice. We adapt our curriculum to align with your learner's interests, including genres like jazz, classical, rock, pop, and blues. You might even compose your own saxophone melody!

Topics we cover include:
- Rhythm and Tempo
- Note Recognition and Reading
- Fingering and Key Placement
- Musical Expression and Artistry
- Form and Technique
- Understanding Scales and Chord Progressions
- Improvisation and Composition
- Saxophone History and Styles

These private, 1:1 saxophone lessons with Mr. Nathan are all about having fun while learning! Let’s make music together!

About Mr. Nathan:

My name is Nathan Pruetting and I started attending the University of Utah as of Fall
2024. At the university, I plan on majoring in computer science with a minor in jazz
guitar. I am 18 years old and I teach guitar and saxophone.

I have played the guitar for 10 years and saxophone for 7 years. I have been very involved musically since I was a kid and want to teach what I've learned to students who are like me; ambitious and curious about music in general. I have had many experiences performing with small rock groups and big jazz bands, and wish to use my knowledge to help my students be motivated and spark their curiosity in music!
