Let's swing from the treetops! Join me, Teacher Karen, as we explore vowels in this rainforest themed ongoing reading class! During this weekly class, learners will focus on building their reading and phonics skills as they learn vowel pairs, digraphs, and diphthongs. Two vowel letters that make a single sound are called a digraph (also known as a vowel pair). For example, “ai” in the word rain is a vowel digraph. A vowel diphthong is a sound in speech in which the first vowel sound glides into the second. The words boil and toy have the diphthongs “oi” and “oy.” Novice readers need to build digraph sound associations so that when they see a digraph, they can decode it quickly and with confidence. Each week we will be joined by our rainforest friends Susie the Sloth, Pete the Parrot, Ted the Treefrog, and Molly the Monkey. These animal characters will help guide learners as they learn a new vowel pair each week. Classes will begin with an introduction to the vowel sound of the week. Learners will learn to read vocabulary words containing the target vowel pair. Then, we will play a fun "Charades" guessing game together to practice the vowel combination further. Following this activity, learners will complete a printable worksheet that incorporates words with the vowel pair learned that day in class. This is a great chance for learners to work on their writing and fine motor skills. Worksheets will be uploaded weekly to the Outschool classroom page at least 24 hours before each class starts. Finally, class will conclude with a story time where learners will need to listen carefully and identify words that contain the daily vowel pair. Here is the class schedule indicating weekly vowel topics with example vocabulary words that students will learn: Fall Schedule Week of October 17-23: “ai” (rain, mail) Week of October 24-30: “ea” (head, bread) Please note: Learners will need to have basic reading skills in order to be successful in this class. They should at least know all of their letter names and sounds and be starting to learn to read. This class will incorporate many visual aids to help learners with word recognition. I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon. Happy learning! :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm Teacher Karen! Welcome to my learning space at Outschool. I am so excited about teaching your child!
I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband, one-year-old son, and two dogs. I have an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child and Youth Studies from Brock University. I am a certified Educational Assistant to help students with special needs in school classrooms. I also have TESOL certification. My passion is teaching reading and phonics to young learners.
I have been teaching for over 15 years in private education. As a stay-at-home Mom, I currently teach part-time on Outschool. I am an experienced online teacher having taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for five years online to students in Asia. I also spent one year living abroad teaching English in South Korea. Furthermore, I was the head teacher of an early reading program for preschoolers for several years. At this learning center I also tutored elementary students afterschool in reading, language arts, and math. I've tutored privately for families and worked as an au pair nanny, daycare assistant, and volunteered for numerous children community outreach programs over the years. I have also worked with children who have reading disabilities like dyslexia and other learning challenges.
I love helping my students to learn, grow, and shine! My classroom is a fun and interactive place. I strongly believe a child’s learning environment needs to be positive and engaging for success. I strive to make my classroom welcoming to all my learners offering them excitement, fun, and praise as they learn to read. I am a patient, kind, and encouraging teacher. My teaching methods are dynamic --reaching all students and their unique learning styles and needs. I like to incorporate phonic skills, vocabulary, games, stories, and printable worksheet activities in my classes. I keep my class sizes small so learners stay engaged and can interact more with me and their classmates.
When I am not teaching, I spend my free-time with my family and friends. I enjoy doing outdoor activities like walking, camping, and going to our family’s cottage by the lake. I also like to cook, make arts & crafts, take photos, and travel.
Thank you for stopping by and I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon. Happy learning! :)
