Description

Class Experience

Students will be introduced to the novel's theme of courage and determination in the face of danger, and the character of Dr. Livesey.
I have three university degrees in literature - that's why I get to call myself 'Doctor' Radice. I've also taught literature for more than thirteen years in schools, to classes ranging from age nine to eighteen.
It would be useful for students to read the first chapter of the novel before class, but this is not essential.
 1 file available upon enrollment
I provide a sample of my detailed young reader's guide to the novel as part of the enrollment fee. It would be very useful if this could be printed out before class. Students can access the text of the novel for free online. For example, it can be found here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/120/120-h/120-h.htm Parents may nevertheless wish to purchase a hard copy if they prefer. If they do so, they may purchase any edition. Other than that, students just need paper and pen or pencil.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be the opportunity for informal assessment during the class. Students may also submit their written work at the end of class if they wish to receive further feedback on how to improve it.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
There are some violent and frightening scenes in the novel as a whole which may upset younger readers. However, the scene on which we focus in this class only involves the threat of violence, which is not carried out.
Students can access the text of the novel for free online. For example, it can be found here:
