In this knowledge packed week long adventure students explore the cultural and natural wonders of SE Asia! Our itinerary includes visiting Orangutans in Sumatra, ancient civilizations in Myanmar, and a journey through Vietnam.
Class experience
SE Asia is full of opportunities for adventure and cultural exploration. In this multi-day class we'll travel from the tropical islands of Indonesia, up the Malay Peninsula and into the heart of SE Asias mainland. In each meeting, we'll explore specific wonders in each land and learn the history of the places we visit. Students will learn about SE Asian history, culture, & food. We'll learn about 8 different countries and we'll explore unique cultural elements of each. Students will learn about SE Asian wildlife and endangered species, as well as conservation efforts and the effects of human development. We'll practice the different languages of each country. This course is not intended to be a language course, rather language is used to enhance the students connection and understanding of the culture.
I have studied SE Asian Cultures and the Vietnam-American War at length. I have spent much of the last 4 years traveling and living in SE Asia. I have visited the countries we will explore in this class, and most recently lived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I'll use my photos and videos to create a more immersive 'travel' experience, and can answer students questions on modern SE Asian life.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course will discuss conflict in SE Asian history, including the pre-colonial, colonial, and Vietnam War periods. We'll also discuss instances of ethnic violence in Myanmar and Cambodia. All content will be age appropriate and historically accurate. While this is only a small piece of our discussions in this class, its inclusion is critical in the greater context of the region.
