Have you ever wondered about why some animals are endangered or at risk for extinction? In the class, students will explore different species of organisms at risk for extinction as well as the reasons and efforts made to protect them. They will look at different animals in different parts of the world like the Bengal Tiger who is threatened by circumstances such as illegal trade and habitat loss. Or the Orca Whale whose population has been impacted by activities such as commercial whaling and fishing gear entanglements. Or the Arctic Fox who sadly due to the fur has seen a decrease in numbers. Students will explore topics such as over fishing, habitat loss & fragmentation, and pollution in considering what puts animals at risk. Each week will explore a different region of the world and see what efforts are being done to protect animals. We will be exploring different regions and animals in each class. Week 1: Endangered Animals in Canada Week 2: Endangered Animals in Australia Week 3: Endangered Animals in England Week 4: Endangered Animals in Florida Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material. There are no pre-requisites for this course, just a love for animals.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been working as a private tutor for grades 5-12 in Science and English since 1999. I also worked as student mentor to post doctoral and summer student fellows for over ten years while I worked as a Research Chemist in marine & geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During my work there, I had the opportunity to become an author in a text book on high resolution mass spectometry and as well as being part of a documentary on the Discovery Channel. Previous to my work at Woods Hole, I worked as a chemical technician in a local environmental lab working on land and water pollution. During the summer, I also was blessed with the most incredible opportunity of working as a naturalist on a whale watch boat. Following my time working in research, I owned and operated a childcare for over 7 years where I taught preschool and tutored grade school children in the afternoon. I earned my B.S. in Cellular/Molecular Biology with a minor in Biochemistry from Bridgewater State University in 2000 and a M.S. in Education in 2015 from Walden University. Currently I am working on my M.S. in Biology with a specialization in Environmental Sciences from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. I have loved teaching and mentoring students of all ages and am thankful to add online teaching to my experiences in education. I am a huge advocate of online learning since it has not only benefited me, but my children as well.
