In this intermediate painting club learners will come together to improve skills in observational painting and creative critical thinking as we use Google map data to travel around the globe and work ‘en plein air’…. with a twist! Each and every week we will begin with a 10 minute overview of landscape painting basics, techniques for depth of field, value and proportion, and how to focus on the line of action. After introductions and overview, we will use map crunch to explore destinations from around the world as this program drops our view randomly from their global database. Each week we will paint a new location that is selected at random using the program MAP CRUNCH and generated on screen as reference, curated by the instructor. Learners will be provided with the image in the classroom afterwards if they care to continue working but will be asked to stop at the end of class time. The more often artists engage in this practice the faster artistic skills and critical thinking come, and they do so with increasing ease. This skill building exercise can yield some fantastic results when practiced regularly. At the end of each class learners will be able to share their paintings from the session. This class is ideal for learners who are serious about developing their art skills and are looking for a relaxed but curated environment. This is not a how-to class and learners should expect to come away with exercises in various stages of completion but also and an increase in artistic development and confidence. Learners should be familiar with painting in their chosen mediums and have a keen interest in developing their landscape painting skills. Learners in this class should be comfortable speaking in the class, being on camera, and sharing their work with the class.
Learning Goals
Learners will expand their visual arts language and problem solving skills while building a regular practice in landscape painting. Learners who join this group regularly will find themselves better able to identify point of interest, apply theories of composition, interpret their surroundings, demonstrate an understanding of light, shadow, saturation, depth of field, leading lines, overlap, and various colour facets of colour theory.
