US Grade 2 - 5
Calling young architects and world travellers! Do you want to travel the world in Minecraft? In this five-day class, students will recreate historical structures from around the world. Students will learn about the structure, its country/culture, and its significance while “traveling” worldwide within the digital world of Minecraft. The student will also be building world monuments inside of Minecraft using Creative mode and prepare a presentation to share with classmates. Among their travels, students will visit countries such as Egypt, France, Italy, and China. They will research the country and its culture, along with major monuments. For example, a student visiting Italy may choose to research the Colosseum before building it in Minecraft. Another week, a student may visit China by studying the Great Wall and constructing it in Minecraft. For this class, only Minecraft Java Edition (not the Bedrock edition) for PC or Mac is supported. It is not compatible with iPads, tablets, phones, Chromebook, or game consoles. Students must purchase the Java Edition of Minecraft for their personal computers; tablets, Chromebook or consoles will not suffice. In addition to providing a fun experience students will learn how to: - Research a country/building’s history to better understand its culture - Execute their knowledge through building world monuments in Minecraft - Practice preparing and giving presentations on monuments - Develop negotiating skills when conflict arises in a group setting and engage in teamwork - Give instructions to others and accept feedback from teachers and peers alike - Use technology to accomplish goals Shortly after the end of the class, students will receive their Minecraft map. They can be proud of all the hard work they put into making it. The teacher will wait up to 15 minutes for students to arrive. If students do not show up within that time and haven’t provided advance notice, the session will not be rescheduled.
Learning Goals
These are the learning goals and activities over the classes:
Day 1 (1.5 hours)
- Meet their fellow students for the class and establish a relationship
- Learn about the theme for the week and do research on the topic online
- Establish a basic understanding of the building’s history and culture
Day 2 (1.5 hours)
- Use a Google Doc to collect information about the country’s culture and history about the monument. Begin constructing monuments.
Day 3 (1.5 hours)
- Continue building and conduct more research to put in their presentations. Students will peer-review each others’ research.
Day 4 (1.5hours)
- Depending on the students’ age, students will prepare a Google Slide OR verbal presentation to present to the class. They will practice before presentation time.
Day 5 (1.5hours)
- Wrap up their builds/presentation and present to their classmates
