Description
Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
Explorers will develop the following skills during this Expedition: Research Note taking Sources & citations (MLA) Organization & structure of article writing Editing & revising Digital design (aesthetics & skills) Publishing Giving feedback
I have been teaching reading and language arts classes for over twelve years for students K-12, as well as adults. All of my writing classes are integrated with other subject content such as history, science, and math, so a variety of cross-curricular skills are covered, but the emphasis remains on the written and oral components that hit language arts standards and skills. Additionally, I worked exclusively with high school students, leading international summer programs that covered a variety of topics such as sustainability, local history and geography, earth and marine science, business, and non-profit management.
Field work will be assigned each week to be done between live meetings. It will typically entail completing research, note taking, writing articles, and doing design work.
All of the supplies needed for this course are digital, however a notebook and pen will be useful for writing and sketching out the design process.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Each Explorer will receive three rubrics at the end of the Expedition: elements of writing, digital magazine production, and general class participation. The rubrics will utilize a 5 point system, which can easily be converted into letter grades for course credit.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Parents should be sure to monitor their child's independent online usage.
Explorers will be conducting their own research using web browsers, travel websites like Trip Advisor, YouTube videos, and other digital content. They are welcome to pull from print sources such as books and magazines if they have access.
