Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel into a black hole? What would you see? What would you feel? Where would you go? Did you know that the word “spaghettification” is a real term used by scientists when talking about traveling into black holes? Students will go on a journey into a black hole to learn about this mystical phenomenon. The class is a simulation to help students visualize the different properties of black holes and how they influence objects in their environment. Students will learn and use physics concepts such as gravity, light, motion, and density, throughout the different modeled scenarios. This course is on a specialized topic within the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. The course will stray away from complex mathematics to be more accessible to students of all mathematical levels. Throughout the lesson, students will gain confidence in skills that are applicable to all fields of science such as questioning, predicting, observing, and critical thinking.

Teacher expertise and credentials
This is an adaptation of a lesson I taught for 8th graders for two years at a college preparatory school. The foundation of this unit is based on research conducted by leading scientists in the field of astrophysics. The course is then enhanced with age-appropriate material designed to be accessible for teenagers and address a wide variety of learning styles.
