Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will have fun learning more about Ancient Greek Culture. Depending upon the topic or theme of the lesson, students will be able to...
* understand the difference between BCE and CE
* locate Greece and the island of Crete on a map
* locate the Aegean Sea, Sea of Crete, Mediterranean Sea, and Ionian Sea
* describe what a day in the life of a child living in ancient Greece would be like
* explain who Homer is and his contribution to Greek Mythology
* define vocabulary words related to the lesson - (example) archeologist, polis, acropolis, archaic, democracy, oligarchy
* summarize the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur and explain its lesson

EXAMPLE Lesson Goals: Students will be able to explain...
"BCE stand for BEFORE COMMON ERA. As time passes, the years actually become smaller in number as events occur closer to the birth of Jesus, which begins with year 1 and the letter CE for COMMON ERA."

"The Minoans were an early Greek civilization who lived on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea until the 11th century BCE. The Minoans were named after the mythical King Minos, who was one of the many sons of Zeus."

"The myth of Theseus and the Minotaur is a myth about keeping promises. According to legend, king Minos ruled Athens and forced the Athenians to send young people into the labyrinth containing the Minotaur every nine years. The Minotaur was a terrible monster with the body of a man, and the head of a bull. If King Minos would stop his attacks, the king of Athens would offer children to feed the Minotaur. However, the king of Athens' son - Theseus - volunteers to enter the labyrinth and kill the Minotaur." (Take this class to find out how he does it!)
