In this crafting class I will teach students how to upcycle an old or worn out t-shirt into yarn. We will also cover how to make both a three strand braid and a five strand braid so that students can turn their yarn into bracelets, headbands, or other accessories. The class will be taught as a step by step demonstration that the students will be able to follow along at home with their own materials and ask any questions that come up.
Students will learn how to upcycle a knit t-shirt into yarn. Students will also learn two different braiding techniques to be able to quickly make wearable items that they can wear or share with friends. This class will reinforce the importance of accuracy when measuring, cutting, and following instructions.
1 file available upon enrollment-An old t-shirt - have a t-shirt that’s ready for the trash? It’s perfect for this class! -A pair of scissors that are sharp enough to cut fabric -A ruler that measures inches (a 12” school ruler would be fine but a longer one is great if you have it) -Something that will make visible marks on your shirt (non-permanent markers are great for lighter colors, chalk is excellent on darker colors) -A binder clip and something flat to clip it to (this will be used to hold the yarn in place while braiding) -A piece of paper and 5 paper clips -Either a pen or pencil
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We will be using scissors in this class that are sharp enough to cut fabric. An adult should remain nearby during the class.
