Class experience
In this one-time class featuring characters from Mario, Kirby, and The Legend of Zelda, students will explore Bowser's Kingdom and take on Bowser himself as they race to complete a Nintendo-themed escape room. I have created this activity in PowerPoint, and as students navigate back and forth through the different slides (or "rooms") they will encounter a variety of fun and educational challenges, including word puzzles, logic puzzles, and Mario trivia. I am a teacher, playwright, and published YA author, and I've previously worked for a high school where I taught writing and ACT/SAT prep. I've also taught English to younger children overseas, led educational events and programming at various theaters around Chicago, and taught reading, language arts, and educational escape room-based courses to more than 7000 elementary and middle school students online.
Students may want to have pen and paper on hand, especially if their computer doesn't have the annotate tool, to work out some of the puzzles.
While there are some references to fire flowers, bows and arrows, and battling enemies, it is all Nintendo-themed and kid-friendly. The puzzles are also not stressful, and no students will be put on the spot to answer anything they don't want to.
