50 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
Students are encouraged to create slide shows (5 minutes or less), models, drawings, and other art projects to share with the class... But it is not a requirement, and they are welcome to just come and talk!Class Experience
Do you love land transport vehicles like trains, semi-trucks, motorcycles, race cars, electric & cooking oil powered cars, or vintage autos? Maybe your interests are up in the air and you want to learn about aircraft like jets, turboprop planes, zeppelins, rescue helicopters, gliders, or hot air balloons? How about vehicles made for the water like submarines, sailboats, ocean liners, and cargo ships? Wherever your particular vehicle interests lie, I hope you'll join us in this on-going social club for kids who love vehicles of all kinds! Each week we'll get together and everyone will have the chance to show & tell something about their favorite vehicles. Students may share short videos and photos, and join in lively discussion as we practice taking turns, listening, and having vehicle themed conversations. Students are also encouraged to share vehicle themed art projects, dioramas, tracks, minis and models of all kinds, plastic block-built creations, and even their Roblox, Minecraft, and other layout/world building games themed around vehicles! Students may create and share slideshows and presentations about their favorite vehicles, too! Based on student interest, we may also include hands on projects, have a special theme for the week, or discuss vehicle history, preservation, and innovation... but students are always welcome to use their sharing time for *their* special vehicle interest. Each week will stand alone, so students may join the class at any time. The weekly discussion will be student lead and inspired - I will have fun conversation starters prepared, but will allow students to inspire the direction the class takes each week and follow their enthusiasm. I'll act as a moderator, time-keeper (for fair sharing time), and offer guidance for friendly conversation and sharing. Everyone is welcome - we can all learn from each other and offer encouragement! So if you like vehicles want to talk about them with friends, this is the club for you!
Learning Goals
In this weekly club students will have the opportunity to share their work, receive encouraging feedback, improve their photography/art/modeling skills and knowledge of the vehicles they enjoy... while making new friends who share a common interest!
Heather will facilitate positive discussions and guide socialization skills towards inclusion and kindness.
There will be weekly reminders of safety and curtesy - for both virtual interactions, as well as when we want to take pictures of awesome vehicles!

Supply List
Students should bring their excitement about vehicles (whatever YOU like!), as well as be ready to share 2-5 minutes worth of vehicle themed content. For your first week in class, please bring a picture (to hold up, or to screen share) of your current favorite vehicle (you don't have to be the one who took it) so we can get to know each other better!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Prior to the pandemic, I was the camp director for a railroad summer camp. I spent 11 years working for a historic railroad offering tours, shop experiences, and planning special events and educational programs to help young "rail-fans" grow in skills related to their interest in trains... From hands-on experience restoring these amazing machines, to small scale models, as well as the history of the people who's lives were shaped by the railroad industry. This job connected me with students who's interests went beyond trains to a variety of vehicles and transport machinery - and I really enjoy offering safe and kind spaces for kids to share their interests with each other!
I also have many years of experience working to create a social spaces for young folks that are safe and inclusive for neurodiverse young people (Autism, ADHD, and various other learning/processing differences.) I enjoy helping all my students share their interests and learn group social skills (like taking turns listening and sharing, and finding a way to engage with other people's interests that differ from our own) and endeavor to foster a safe space where everyone has the opportunity to share, be heard, and participate in the way most comfortable and enjoyable for them. If you have any concerns about how your child might best be included in and enjoy this class, please don't hesitate to contact me!
