Class Experience

Are you ready to take charge of your own health and wellness? In this class we will be learning how to navigate the world of adult healthcare. We will cover everything from making doctors appointments, how to get a referral, filling prescriptions, and even how health insurance works (something that can have even adults scratching their heads!)

Class will include a skills assessment, short lecture with Power Point slides, and a chance to practice the skills with classmates. At the end of class, there will be an open discussion on skills each teen already feels comfortable completing and an opportunity for them to share what works well for them.

Teens that complete the class will be equipped with techniques to help them confidently ask questions and advocate for their own health needs.

Class structure will be:
- Introduction and healthcare skills assessment
- Interactive lecture on how to navigate adult healthcare
     + Finding the right doctor
     + Making an appointment
+ Understanding the sequence of a doctors appointment
+ Techniques for advocating at the doctors office
     + Filling a prescription
+ Recognizing when prescriptions need to be adjusted
+ Techniques for communicating with the doctor outside of appointments
+ Asking for a referral or 2nd opinion
     + Understanding health insurance
+ Your rights as a patient
- Practicing the skill of advocacy in the healthcare setting
- Open discussion on what skills learners are already comfortable with and an opportunity to share what already works for each learner
- Each learner will create an action plan to help them move closer to handling their own health and wellness.

No prior expertise is necessary for this class! We welcome all experience levels!
