US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Native American nations all around North America have been celebrating the harvest for thousands of years and still do today. The true story behind Thanksgiving is a little too harsh for young learners, so as an alternative this class will focus on traditional harvest festivals and cultural concepts of giving thanks. We will talk about harvest festivals like the Green Corn Ceremony celebrated by nations like the Cherokee and Seminole, the Wampanoag nation's Cranberry Day, and several others. Then we will read the story Giving Thanks: a Native American Good Morning Message and talk about how many of our cultures give thanks every day. We will end class with a simple craft of making multi-colored corn with pipe cleaners and pony beads. (Parents, please be on hand (off screen!) to help with the craft. Ihéedń - thank you.)

Parental Guidance
This class will not address the true history of Thanksgiving due to the sensitive content of that history. I might mention that the 1621 story was not the "first thanksgiving," if Thanksgiving comes up, but that is all.
Parents, please be on hand (but off screen!) to assist with the craft as needed. Thank you.
Supply List
1 pipe cleaner cut in half (both parts are needed) - any color, but green, yellow or brown would work best for corn 24 pony beads - any colors can be used, but corn colors would be yellow, white, brown/tan, green, blue, purple, red, and orange. (Pony beads work best. Students have struggled in the past to make this work with other kinds of beads.) optional - yarn or string to make the corn into a necklace, but this is not required
