Class Experience

****To enroll in this class, students must have already earned a yellow belt (9th Kyu) at a minimum in either at a traditional karate dojo or have completed my beginner karate program. That class is designed to give students the basic foundation to be successful in this class. ***

In my online karate dojo, students will get their heart rates ups, burn some energy, and have fun while learning new techniques, Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) drills. We will help our karate-ka's (karate students) improve their coordination and balance, while also focusing on building character traits like listening, respect and confidence.

*Level:
This program is specifically designed for students who have earned at least a yellow belt or 9th Kyu either at a traditional karate dojo or have completed my beginner karate program (Winter Camp, 5-Week Program, Beginner Program)

*Course Structure:
This course is an ongoing class that meets weekly, and is designed to replicate a more traditional karate class structure. Students will be allowed to test every 12 weeks if they have attended a minimum number of classes and have a solid understanding of the techniques. Promotion is dependent on when the student is ready. We will offer approximately five to six promotion tests during the year. Your student will not be required to participate in all or any of these tests, but will be invited to promote if eligible.

*How I teach:
This class is more designed to mirror a traditional karate class. We will learn new techniques, play games, and work on our physical fitness as well. The class will be engaging. I will demonstrate each technique for the students and then together we will practice slowly for proficiency. We will then quicken the pace as students are more comfortable with the techniques and balance needed. I believe in positive reinforcement and so I give students plenty of praise to build their confidence, while also making corrections to each and every student in my class.

*Weekly Schedule:
Over the course of this ongoing class, students will progress beyond what they learned in the beginner program. This class will mirror a more traditional karate class, where students of all levels train together working on their kihons, kata and kumite drills. Students will still be able to participate in belt promotion which will be offered a few times throughout the year.

Learning Goals

Students will learn new traditional Japanese karate kihons (basics) each week. They will hear the Japanese words associated with these techniques and will learn to count to 10. Students will also improve their motor control and balance.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Sensei Sheela and I am a former member of the United States National Karate Team. I have competed in the Pan American Championships, Italian Open, All-Japan Championships and the World University Games. I won several national and international titles during my time competing. I have taught students of all ages across South Florida, and now I want to introduce your child to the art and sport that I fell in love with at a young age. I have earned a Shodan (first degree) black belt in Goju Ryu and a Nidan (second degree) black belt in Ryuei Ryu; both of which are traditional Japanese karate styles.

I have taught karate for over a decade and I am a mom to a 3 year old. I have learned how to keep a child's attention. My classes are fun, high energy and structured.
