Class Experience

This on-going course will continue through the end of April when President Biden hits the end of his first 100 days in office.

It will be a highly engaging class, where learners are able, and encouraged, to participate throughout. The goal for this class is for learners to become more aware of what is happening in the U.S. government and hopefully serve as an encouragement for them to watch or read the news.

The topics covered in each class will be current events based, and therefore will be different each week. Each class will be a checkpoint of what policy items President Biden was able to tackle since our last meeting. We'll discuss those items in an age-appropriate way, and also keep a running list of his accomplishments to date as President.

This class will be a non-partisan class examining factual accomplishments. While we will talk about the accomplishments, we will leave the discussion over the positives and negatives of each action to be discussed at home.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
President Biden has said he will tackle criminal justice reform and immigration as part of his first 100 days. If these, or any other potentially sensitive topics do come up, we will approach them from a factual standpoint as to what the President did, and tell the learners to discuss the positives and negatives within their own households.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Jake! I have a BA in Political Science and Spanish. For the past nine and a half years I've worked for a youth-serving nonprofit organization. I spent five of those years as a program director responsible for creating age appropriate programming for youth between the ages of five and ten. I've also been fortunate enough through this organization to work at summer camp for eight summers teaching a number of skills based subjects.

I endeavor to make my classes highly engaging and fun. Students should expect to be asked lots of questions during class rather than sitting in a lecture as I believe this helps students develop their critical thinking skills.

You'll find me teaching classes about outdoor skills, civics, and even some sports. I hope to see you in class!
