Class Experience

Come join me for an interactive class based on some of the science standards for 5th grade (NGSS). Each class begins with some background information about the topic, and proceeds to a hands on experiment or activity. I do the experiments/activities with the kids and coach them through the steps. This is a special class specifically for 10 and 11 year olds. To help us get to know each other and build a learning community, the class will be capped at 5 students.

**PLEASE NOTE: this class requires supplies as we will be doing a hands on experiment or activity every week**

A detailed supply list will be provided allowing enough time to obtain the supplies. Every effort will be made to keep the supplies reasonable and the cost minimal.

Schedule:
Week 1: We will learn about the geosphere. We will do an activity to explore the properties of the geosphere and begin a model of planet Earth that will be added to each week.
Week 2: We will learn about the biosphere. We will make our own biosphere to observe over the next 5 weeks.
Week 3: We will learn about the hydrosphere. We will do an activity examining the distribution of water on Earth.
Week 4: We will learn about the atmosphere. We will make some weather measuring instruments and collect some data to share with the class.
Week 5: We will play a game to demonstrate how the Earth's systems interact.
Week 6: We will present our models of planet Earth, and craft a pledge to protect the Earth. Each of us will come up with an idea of an actionable item to work on going forward.

Approximate supplies required (a detailed week by week list will be provided once registered):
- balloons
- paper mâché materials: flour, water, ripped up newspaper
- craft paint (all colours)
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
- white school glue
- other craft items (e.g. popsicle sticks, coloured paper, pompoms, etc.)
- ziploc bag
- water
- paper cups
- straws
- empty water bottle
- empty tin can or round plastic container (sharp edge removed)
- some outdoor plants and soil

Standards:
5-ESS2-1 Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
5-ESS2-2 Describe and graph the amount and percentages of water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.
5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth's resources and environment.

Each class will last for approximately 1 hour.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Learning Goals

Students will be learning about the Earth's systems and how they interact.

Hello!
I am passionate about teaching and learning. I believe that everyone, at any age can learn anything! Learning is exciting, and I am continuously filling my well of curiosity with new information about things that interest me.

I have taught kids from kindergarten to grade 12, as well as young adults in university. I have also homeschooled my three kids and they have taken classes on Outschool.

I hold degrees in Education, a Master’s in Physical Geography and a Bachelor's in Environmental Science. I teach classes in science, geography and math.

I love textile art and can often been found sewing, knitting, felting, or weaving. My next big project is figuring out how to make shoes! I am also fluent in French and love traveling to francophone areas.
