Informal, in-classClass Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
-- What Is Taught -- Students will learn a basic speech outline that uses the introduction, body, conclusion format. This is used for informative, persuasive, demonstrative, and entertaining speeches. All students begin with informative speaking. Next, they will do persuasive and demonstrative. Finally, they will choose from a myriad of speeches that vary in length, skill sets, and structures. Every student is unique. They have varying degrees of speech skills, so I keep the class at a maximum of 4 students. This provides me with the ability to work with each student where they are at and help them improve at their own pace. Some students join the class with no experience, while others have participated in debate clubs and speech competitions. We will loosely adhere to the following rotation: speech preparation, speech presentation, activities. This is an Ongoing class and I never know who will be in class week to week. Each week's schedule is tentative and subject to change. -- Speech Preparation -- Each student will have their own independent speech to prepare based on how long they have been in class and their speech skills. I encourage students to work on their speeches at home if they have time, but I understand that students travel, become ill, have homework, and study for exams, so I will provide time in class for speech preparation. -- Speech Presentation -- Students will present their speeches upon preparation completion. Feedback will be given to let them know what they are doing well and what areas they can improve in. I can make accommodations if your learner is anxious about presenting in front of others and being put in the spotlight. -- Student Expectations -- I hold high expectations for students. Each student should be able to understand, speak, read, and write English proficiently. We begin with simple topics and short time limits of around 2.5 - 3 minutes. The end goal is to prepare and present full length speeches that take 7-9 minutes to present. -- My Qualifications -- Bachelor's Degree in Education with a focus in Speech/Theatre and English 12+ years of teaching experience (8 years online)
