During this one-time class, students will learn 10 principles of becoming a professional writer. We will begin with a slide show presentation of the 10 tips that I have created to discuss how young students interested in writing can develop themselves into a professional writer. Students will learn about the process of writing and revising as well as steps they can take through their education (classes, majors) as well as things they can do on their own to become a writer. The class will also provide an overview of many types of writing and related careers, such as journalist, editor, novelist, screen writer, technical writer, advertising copywriter, medical writer, grant writer, writing instructor, college professor, and others. Together we will discuss these ideas and discuss where each student is on their journey as a writer. Students will learn how to write daily, research writing outlets and job markets, and interview sources, among other things. Throughout class students will participate and provide their input and career aspirations. Overall, students will learn to identify the work of a professional writer and potential career avenues. As the teacher, I will provide students with an overview of a writing career (or side gig), so they come away with a solid understanding of the topic through discussion, examples, and the interactive sharing of ideas. I look forward to introducing your child to the world of professional writing.
