Tolkien Story Time!
Class experience
This informal Book Club will meet once a week to read and discuss Tolkien’s short stories and poems. Since this is an Ongoing course, students will have the flexibility to decide which poems or stories will be read and when. The teacher will display the poem or story excerpt and students will either listen to the teacher read, or take turns reading aloud. Students will then engage in discussion about the themes, characters, and observations about the poems and how they relate to Tolkien’s...
Students will be able to… Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they "see" and "hear" when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.
1 file available upon enrollmentThe teacher will display all readings on a Powerpoint. Students are welcome to rent or purchase Tolkien's books, but it is not required for this course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
