This informal Book Club will meet once a week to read and discuss Tolkien’s short stories and poems. Since this is an Ongoing course, students will have the flexibility to decide which poems or stories will be read and when. The teacher will display the poem or story excerpt and students will either listen to the teacher read, or take turns reading aloud. Students will then engage in discussion about the themes, characters, and observations about the poems and how they relate to Tolkien’s legendarium. This Story Time is flexible enough that students can determine the schedule of texts read. No prior reading is required, and therefore students can come and go as they please throughout the course. Week of 10/24: All About the Author, J.R.R. Tolkien. Week of 10/31: Poem 1: Nature in Middle Earth Week of 11/7: Poem 2: Ordinary Life in Middle Earth Week of 11/14: Poem 3: Legends in Middle Earth The Poems and schedule will be updated based on student choice. The new schedule will be posted on the Classroom Page any time there is a change.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to…
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem.
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone
Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they "see" and "hear" when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.
