Description
Class Experience
Students will be able to finger knit. Students will be able to cast on and bind off stitches using straight needles. Students will be able to knit the garter stitch using straight needles. Students will be able to make their own knitted projects independently or with the help of an adult.
I have been knitting various projects such as hats, blankets, scarves, and pillows for over 10 years. It is a favorite past-time of mine, so I would love to share my skills with others!
After each class, students will be required to practice the stitches previously learned and to cast on rows for any upcoming projects. The amount of time needed to practice will vary depending on the student's skill level, but expect to put in around 1-2 hours per week.
Size US 15 (10mm) or US 17 (12 mm) straight knitting needles - preferably plastic since they tend to have rounder tips -- $5-$6 Around 200 yards/2 skeins of super bulky (#6) yarn - 1 in the color you want for your bookmark & octopus; 1 in the color you want for the cowl -- $4-$8 per skein Scissors Yarn or tapestry needle to weave in the ends -- less than $1 each Glue and googly eyes/buttons for the octopus eyes
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Student homework will be assessed informally at the start of class time and throughout the lesson as we practice together.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Although the students will be knitting with large needles, which aren't sharp, they should still be used with care. A parent should supervise the student on their first (and preferably second) day of needle knitting to be sure the needles stay far away from the student's face. We will also use scissors to cut the yarn at the end of each project.
