Class Experience

Green Turtle: First we will introduce ourselves to each other. Each learner will have time to describe the piece of food he or she brought to class. We will expand our vocabulary and use adjectives to identify the color, smell and texture of the food. We will compare and contrast the size and shape of the food and count the number of foods we have as a whole class. We will engage in a conversation about healthy food and nutrition.

We will then move on to using the food as a paintbrush, mixing blue and yellow paint to create the secondary color, green. I will provide a downloadable worksheet so the children can make clear predictions, ask what and why questions, and examine the results of the science experiment.

Next, we will create an individual piece of art by using the three colors to paint a green turtle. We will use our fine motor skills to make purposeful marks on the paper and take pride in our own abilities. As we spend time painting our own interpretations of a turtle I will ask scientific questions like, “Where does a turtle live? What do turtles eat? Have you ever seen one?” These questions will encourage the learner to think more broadly about the world around them, but also strengthen their ability to use language as a way to connect with their peers and adults through conversations.

Finally, we will share our paintings with each other, with a focus on being empathetic and compassionate toward the other learners’ perspective. Every piece of art is a representation of the learner’s own sense of self.

*Option - If learners want guidance I will provide a printable turtle worksheet.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I completed the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential as a lead preschool teacher in 2013. This was a hands-on program that ran alongside my work as a teacher. I was evaluated on my ability to nurture a young child’s educational development.

I received a bachelor’s degree in media and communications in 2005 from Wolverhampton University, England. This gave me the expertise to effectively communicate to both parents and fellow teachers in a professional, constructive manner.

As an artist, I completed a photography certificate from the Washington School of Photography in Bethesda, Maryland. I have been a photographer and artist for over 15 years and use these creative skills to bring my lessons alive.

I am currently homeschooling my two year old using my experience in the classroom to create dynamic STEAM activities that help him learn about his world.
