Jen the Entomologist talks about the four groups of arthropods (five, including the extinct trilobite), what an interesting bunch! After a photo-rich lecture presentation, we turn to the drawing board to draw what we're thinking about. Realistic, imaginary, mashups and funny ideas abound as we draw the details of the arthropods we've studied. Historically, we enjoy adding details like unicorn horns and capes, but it's Halloween season! So we are celebrating with Mummy trilobites (soooo extinct...), Witchy dragonflies, Black cat rolly polies and more! We are a cauldron of ideas as we celebrate this awesome group of animals.
Learning Goals
Students will learn a lot about arthropods and explore their own ideas, creativity, and style.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi Friends! I am an entomologist and a mom in Seattle, USA with a lot going on, but I always have time to talk about insects!
I teach science to kids through insects! Calibrated and paced for young kids (4-6, 6-8), we survey the basics of arthropods and the different orders of insects, focusing on a different one each week. We sing original songs and DRAW A LOT. Your kids will be teaching YOU all about these fascinating groups! We use the big words and learn the real facts about arthropods and insects. Young learners love singing our ridiculous and accurate songs all around home.
I have been teaching in various capacities for decades, from substitute everything in private schools to big wedding swing dance lessons. After a lifelong interest in Animal Behavior and evolution, I pursued my interest in the process of learning through novel research on insects, namely the fascinating fly *Ormia ochracea*. Learn more about my research and background on my webpage, www.TinyScience.org!
Graduate school was such a safe environment to learn big things and try new ideas. I try to reproduce that collegiate feeling in my classes, taking kids seriously as we discuss the higher points of an animal group they are already quite familiar with. I teach to create a fun atmosphere to learn science, be an accessible scientist-mom role model, and encourage a community-wide love for science. My full teaching background runs from college through preschool, as well as elders and families through community centers and schools in Seattle (pre-pandemic).
