What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hours per weekAssessment
Assessments come during class, as learners show Jen their page of work. This is a casual science class for building skills and confidence.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 5
Intermediate - Advanced Level
College-style entomology classes for kids. Each week we discuss entomology with emphasis on taxonomy, identification, habitat, ecology, life history, and evolution. Students are welcome to present their own original presentation in the topic of entomology. In lieu of student presentations, Jen relies on ongoing lecture points from her research (evolutionary systems, animal behavior, entomology), academic, and professional experience to promote discussion among the group. All discussion leads are followed. Student expression and discussion manners are emphasized to promote advanced group skills and critical thinking. Because of the ongoing and colloquial nature of these meetings juxtaposed with the nearly infinite topics entomology allows us to study, the weekly topics follow the interest of the students. Jen offers prompts and pursues answers when necessary. Discussion is lively and on topic.
Learning Goals
Students will learn advanced entomology and animal behavior through discussion and photographic/video support.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be looking closely at various arthropods, mostly insects and nothing gnarly.
Supply List
Learners should have something to draw on and something to draw with. Some learners may wish to use a bound journal to keep their work in.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Sources of information used in class include work from scientists E. O. Wilson, Charles Darwin, B. F. Skinner, and many regional field guides. Textbooks include For The Love Of Insects (Wilson), Animal Behavior (Alcock), Intro to insect Biology and Diversity (Daly, Doyen, Purcell), the Handicap Principle (Zahavi), The Origin of Species (Darwin).
Teacher expertise and credentials
Jen earned her master of science in evolutionary biology and entomology before embarking on the master project of motherhood! These, combined, led her to start her business Tiny Science, where she teaches science to kids through insects! Jen's background teaching in special ed gives her an advanced set of skills to keep learners engaged and having fun while learning high-quality information.
