Class Experience

Let's bake together! Cream scones are a very simple treat for small hands to make and delicious for breakfast, snack or teatime. We will measure and mix together and shape our scones into adorable kitty cats before baking. Students can use a variety of ingredients to add faces to their scones, examples can be found in the recipe on enrollment.
Due to the nature of baking, these will come out of the oven after class has ended. We will talk about what to look for when they are done before the class ends.

Allergen note: this class uses gluten and dairy. If your child has a sensitivity to either, please reach out to me and we can discuss substitutions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Laura Doyle and I teach cooking classes to kids from preschool through high school.
I have been working as a cooking instructor for 8 years, teaching kids as young as 1 up to adults. In my classes I focus on cooking with whole foods and really getting to know your ingredients and the core techniques that will help your learner grow in the kitchen. I also have a passion for baking and love to show how to bake tasty breads and treats that are healthy but still very tasty. I encourage my students to explore their ingredients completely with all their senses and taste, touch and smell everything we are cooking with. While having fun in the kitchen is the primary focus of my classes, I take food safety very seriously and have been ServSafe certified, so food safety will be discussed when applicable and age appropriate.
I began my career in natural foods, running the Teaching Kitchen at my local food co-op, so I have a lot of experience writing cooking classes that can be modified to accommodate or focus on special diets and food allergies.
I have been cooking and baking from a very young age. I baked scones for my neighbors, made decadent vegan desserts for my friends in high school and always provided a treat at my college poetry readings.
I studied art and creative writing in college and have taught classes on fiber arts, jewelry making, printmaking and knitting. I also love gardening, quilting and sewing and I look forward to having your learner in my classes.
