Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
In this class, students will create a tie dye shirt or item of their choice!

We will begin with the basics of tying clothing and students will have the opportunity to choose between 3 different types of tie dye designs. Once they select the design I will instruct them on the best methods for tying and students will tie their items.

After tying the item, we will review basic color theory. Followed by a discussion of different methods of dying for each design. Students will then dye their items with my assistance.

Tie dyed items need to sit for 12-24 hours and then be washed out. I will provide directions for washing out items and best practices for care.

I am a very enthusiastic and encouraging teacher. My teaching style in this course learner centric and I allow students to steer the direction of the course based on their interests and needs!

No background knowledge is required but students will need a tie dye kit (listed in Learner Supply List) and a few other simple supplies. Tie Dying can get a little messy so it is recommended students have an outdoor area (or somewhere that can get messy) to dye and clothes they don't mind (possibly) getting some dye on.

Let’s have fun, be creative, and make some wearable art!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Tie dyed clothing will need to be rinsed in the sink and washed alone in a washing machine. You get students may need parental assistance washing out their items. Students may get messy during tie dye so it is recommended they are outside or in area that could possibly get dye on it. Additionally they should wear clothing that could possibly get dyed as well.
Supply List
Students will need a tie dye kit for the class. The kit should include:
1. Rubber bands
2. Plastic or rubber gloves (optional)
3. Dye bottles and dry dyes - some kits have tons of colors. For our class we only need 3 different colors but you are welcome to get more if you’d like.
4. Thick paper plate or plastic tub to dye on.
5. White tee shirt (at least 50% cotton) to dye!
