Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
"One river gives
Its journey to the next.

We give because someone gave to us.
We give because nobody gave to us..." (Excerpt from Albert Rios' "When Giving is All We Have")

The poem, "When Giving is All We Have" will serve as the foundation upon which this class is built and lead us in writing our owns words of thanksgiving. Albert Rios' has written a poem filled with paradoxical statements that reveal the deeper meanings of giving, receiving, and thankful hearts.

We're going to analyze the words of his poem, learn the difference between topic and theme, and about what paradoxes are. After this, we'll write poems based upon the Rios' model. This class will cause us all to dig deeper and share the love from within ourselves through our words.

There will be no required homework, as there is only one session.

Remember, we are all expanding our knowledge together (including the teacher).
I'm looking forward to learning with you!

I'm a poetry nut! I love to read poems, and I love to write them. In my experience, I've found that Haiku is one of the easiest and most enjoyable form to teach kids whether they consider themselves to be writers or not. It's just plain fun!

I absolutely love to write and share the joy of writing, and I've taught writing for several years. I understand that writing isn't everyone's cup of tea, so I am beyond happy to share some ways to bring your words to the surface. Oftentimes, it's just a matter of sorting out what's happening in your brain and getting it to come out in the right order. I'm here for you!
