US Grade 3 - 6
This ongoing class will be an ongoing, current events focused class that discusses the U.S. government in a fairly laid-back but educational way. Participants will be highly encouraged to participate throughout and my hope is that this class will encourage learners to pay more attention to current events in the government and discuss at home. We'll meet weekly and discuss what happened in all three branches of government since our last meeting, in an age-appropriate way. While the topics will be driven by what happens during the week, I do anticipate discussing what the three branches of governmeny are, what their job responsibilities are, how each one checks the other so one doesn't get too powerful, how laws are passed, executive actions, and who is responsible for foreign relations.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the branches of government and the responsibilities of each by using real-world examples.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will cover topics that come up in government, which likely could include immigration, gun reform, voting rights, or other sensitive topics. We'll look at these topics through the lens of how the government works and leave opinions about specific discussions for home.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will be reviewing numerous news outlets including CNN 10 and Time for Kids to build a list of topics to discuss, as well as the congressional records for the week.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Jake! I have a BA in Political Science and Spanish. For the past nine and a half years I've worked for a youth-serving nonprofit organization. I spent five of those years as a program director responsible for creating age appropriate programming for youth between the ages of five and ten. I've also been fortunate enough through this organization to work at summer camp for eight summers teaching a number of skills based subjects.
I endeavor to make my classes highly engaging and fun. Students should expect to be asked lots of questions during class rather than sitting in a lecture as I believe this helps students develop their critical thinking skills.
You'll find me teaching classes about outdoor skills, civics, and even some sports. I hope to see you in class!
