When budding young scientists follow current events and news stories related to the ocean, they are more likely to feel personally connected to the science they are learning. Analyzing and discussing real-world science news is also a way for students to learn about the scientific method and how new data may support or challenge old ideas. Every week we will look at a different scientific article or current event about the ocean, and have a classroom discussion about the relevance and significance of the story. This ongoing class is great for students who are passionate about the ocean, are interested in a career in ocean science, and/or have the desire to stay educated and up to date as to what’s happening in the ocean. This is a multidisciplinary oceans class that calls upon storytelling, news articles, and scientific reports. The class is structured to be engaging and students are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions throughout the class. Students will have the chance to work on their communication skills while learning how to be critical thinkers. This class requires no prior knowledge, as I will help guide students and define new concepts as we go. The desire to learn and the passion for the ocean are the only requirements. If your learner is ready to be a national geographic ocean explorer, this class is for them! Let's dive in!
