Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
This class will provide students the opportunity to increase their knowledge of world history. I can lead the discussion, or students can do research beforehand and share what they found with each other. We will focus on briefly exploring a range of topics that are of interest to the learners. Slides, images and/or video clips will be included. Student participation and discussion is encouraged.

The "week" will be determined by the Monday through Sunday dates. When determining which events to discuss, I will pre-select a range of events that I think would be interesting to participants and ones that support meeting the National Council of Social Studies standards. If a student wants to research an event not on the list, it would need to be discussed first with the parent and I would also need to approve. We'll focus on big history and main ideas. This will not be a lecture about everything that happened "this week" in history.

For example, for the week of February 1-7, my pre-selected range of events would be:
2/1/1884 Oxford dictionary published
2/2/1887 First Groundhog Day in the U.S.
2/4/1938 Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2/4/2004 Zuckerberg launched Facebook
2/6/1952 Elizabeth II crowned Queen of England
2/7/1964 Beatles arrive in New York

I strive to make learning fun and to get students excited about learning history and social studies topics. No prior knowledge is required.

Depending on the number of learners enrolled, and the interest in certain things being discussed, the outline may be adjusted slightly to allow for more depth and/or student led research. Students are encouraged to ask questions, if needed. A positive class culture is a must, so I prefer learners to take turns when participating and to treat each other respectfully.
Learning Goals
-Students will strengthen their understanding about historic events that happened around the world.
-Students will discuss thoughts and ideas about historic events.

Parental Guidance
Violent or graphic images or language will not be included or allowed. Topics will be share in the online classroom. I want to avoid things that would make any student uncomfortable. If a sensitive topic, marginalized group or other historical conversation of sensitive nature occurs, I will ensure the focus is on the historical event we are discussing, relying on the facts.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
