A great way to develop fine motor skills, as well as help young children develop an awareness of themselves is through drawing! By the age of three, children are developing the ability to understand more about themselves. They can talk about their name and their likes and dislikes. They are become more aware of feelings and also that others have feeling and likes dislikes as well. The 3 to 5 year old learns that they are unique and that others around them are too! In this one time class, we will learn to draw a simple figure of themselves. Many children at three and four are still using the "large head with arms and legs attached" kind of picture drawing of a person. We'll look at how to use rectangles to make a body and ovals to make hands and feet. This is not a detailed instructional drawing class as far as adding great detail. It's very simple and learners who are able can embellish their drawings if they like with additional details such as a favorite dress, etc. We'll look at hair and skin color, curly or straight hair and what makes us and each other unique and beautiful! (Be ready to get just a little bit dirty as we use a washable marker to color our finger and make a fingerprint on the paper! Yes, I tried it with a washable marker and it took some determination to get it off. Soap and water might need a little help with some baby oil or cold cream!) Learners will have the opportunity to talk about themselves. In accordance with Outschool's safety and privacy policy, we'll refrain from giving last names, address details etc, but we can talk about things we like, favorite pets and family members with both conversation and simple drawing. I'm finding that usually the preschoolers can take off with this kind of thing and come up with great ideas (for instance, drawing a favorite food, etc.) We'll write the word "ME!" since it's very simple and even preschoolers who aren't writing yet can often form these two letters. If they know how to write their names, that's welcome too! The other part of the lesson will consist of talking about feelings. Part of understanding the world and how they fit into it is understanding that everyone has feelings. We'll talk about things that make us feel happy, sad and angry and we'll draw some some simple emotions. Learners this age love sharing with the class about what makes them unique and they will have time to talk about themselves and listen to others in the class. During this time when many are still out of school and peer groups due to covid, this is of particular importance. Brainstorming should be a big part of the class but I also understand that some young learners aren't comfortable yet speaking in a Zoom session and this is also perfectly fine. They're still absorbing and actively learning! Supplies are simply paper and markers (washable since we'll do a fingerprint too) or crayons are also welcome for coloring as well! If your learner enjoyed this class, I have several other drawing classes related to science and social studies including: "Let's Draw Bugs Together: Pre-K and K Beginner Drawing and Writing Class!" "D is for Draw a Dinosaur A Preschool and Kindergarten Alphabet Drawing Class" "B Is for Butterfly C Is for Caterpillar: A Pre-K and Kindergarten Drawing Class" I also run weekly circle time classes where we learn letters, numbers and different topics in science and social studies!: "Circle Time With Mrs. Kelly"

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello from beautiful northern New Jersey! I'm excited at the opportunity to continue to bring a love for learning to children after homeschooling my own children for the past 20 years. Since 2017, I have taught over 5700 classes to Chinese students ages 3 to 15. I have a BA degree in Elementary Education and English Writing (dual major) and an American Literature minor from William Paterson University in New Jersey. I have a New Jersey teaching license for grades K-8, and TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification.
As my children grew, I did a lot of volunteer teaching which includes several years of teaching preschool/kindergarten VBS (Vacation Bible School) and Sunday school classes, as well as teaching Pioneer Girls. In each of these, I heavily incorporated arts, crafts and hands on participation into our curriculum. I also taught a Sunday school class for special needs children for five years. This experience has given me an understanding of children with learning and behavioral challenges. Preschool aged children have always held a special place in my heart in my teaching experience with VIPKID, and I have incorporated puppets, art, and a lot of humor into my online classroom with them with great results. When I can get a belly laugh out of a student online, my whole day is made! My teaching style is low pressure with lots of positive encouragement, as I strive to help every child feel that they have something valuable to contribute.
When I was 12 years old, I discovered what would turn into my lifelong passion; antiques and history. In my early teens, I devoured every book in the library that I could find about antique dolls and toys. When I grew into adulthood, I channeled my obsession into a business and since 1997, I have owned Suburban Treasure, an online antique and collectibles business. I am also a professional antique doll restorationist.
In addition, I am also a self taught artist and since 2004, have created art dolls in my studio "Spring Valley Studios Sasha Dolls". My dolls have found their ways into collectors' homes all over the world!
My childhood interests shaped my future career. I realized in my own children that I very much wanted to foster in them that same love and desire for learning. I try to carry that passion into my classroom! My heart is in preschool and kindergarten aged learners and I have discovered truly how much I love this age group as I have been teaching it almost exclusively here on Outschool!
I hope to see your child soon in the classroom!
