The focus of this class will be on using repetition and strategies to help understand place value and improve addition. Each class will run in the same format to instill confidence and security in the children. We will begin with a mental math warm-up that will involve various methods of counting. I will give students numbers to read and ask them to write numbers. We will practice identifying relationships, such as "more than" and "less than." We will also practice identifying the "whole" and "parts" of numbers. We will spend time each lesson working on place value and converting numbers between standard form and expanded form. In each lesson I will review the skill taught in the previous session. A new skill will be introduced and practiced. Lessons may end with a game to reinforce the new skill. Week One: Review and practice of Addition Strategies and place value. Students will read numbers in standard form and convert to expanded form. We will practice comparing numbers and finding missing numbers in addition and subtraction problems. Week Two: We will review and practice addition strategies, comparing numbers, finding missing numbers and place value. I will teach the concept of rounding. Week Three: We will review and practice place value, addition strategies, and rounding. We will practice identifying 2D shapes and 3D figures.
