"Some Pig. Humble. Radiant. These are the words in Charlotte's Web, high up in Zuckerman's barn. Charlotte's spiderweb tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur's life when he was born the runt of his litter." - Amazon Students will need to purchase the book "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White for this class. ****Please have your child read the first TWO chapters in the book before the first class meeting. **** Welcome to book club! This tween book club is perfect for having storytime with well-written literature. In this six-day book club (meeting once a week for six weeks), students will independently read "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White. Before the book club camp begins, students will read the first TWO chapters in the book ready to discuss on the first day of class. Thereafter, each class will begin with a fun and interesting "question of the day" critical thinking prompt related to the assigned reading. Then, students can briefly discuss any initial thoughts they had on the assigned reading. The teacher will then engage the students in an "order the events" activity, a "prediction" activity, and several critical thinking prompts that lead to exciting discussion and ideas on the character's behavior and choices. At the end of class, the teacher will assign chapters to read independently before the next class meeting. Throughout the lesson, students will get to take "brain breaks" and guess the secret puzzle. Here is the class schedule: Day 1: Students will have come to class having independently read chapters 1 and 2: "Before Breakfast" and "Wilbur" Homework for day 2: independent reading of chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6. Day 2: Discussion of chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6: "Escape," "Loneliness," "Charlotte," and "Summer Days" Homework for day 3: independent reading of chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10 Day 3: Discussion of chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10: "Bad News," "A Talk at Home," "Wilbur's Boast," and "An Explosion" Homework for day 4: independent reading of chapters 11, 12, 13, and 14 Day 4: Discussion of chapters 11, 12, 13, and 14: "The Miracle," "A Meeting," "Good Progress," and "Dr. Dorian" Homework for day 5: independent reading of chapters 15, 16, 17, and 18 Day 5: Discussion of chapters 15, 16, 17 and 18: "The Crickets," "Off to the Fair," "uncle," and "The Cool of the Evening" Homework for day 6: independent reading of chapters 19, 20, 21, and 22 (finish book) Day 6: Discussion of chapters 19, 20, 21, and 22 (finish book): "The Egg Sac," "The Hour of Triumph," "Last Day," and "A Warm Wind" Fun end of book club celebration by creating alternate endings to the story.
