This course will cover the ELA Common Core power standards for both literature and informational text. This course will help your student discover they are “smart,” and reading is possible. Through standards-based engaging instruction, the chances of summer learning loss that is so prevalent are reduced. Your child will work towards being able to read, analyze, and comprehend text. Each week we will focus on the power standards of the week through explicit teaching of the skill. Students will engage in a virtual field trip to help build background knowledge before participating in a shared reading of a passage. Students will learn CLOSE reading strategies and practice annotating through Nearpod. Each lesson ends with a discussion question in which students will engage in a collaborative conversation. Fun games to practice the weekly standards are planned throughout the class to help keep a high level of engagement. The text is provided for each lesson Week 1 Day 1 Standards: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text (referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers), determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text, and describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
