Computer software is built from algorithms—clear, step-by-step instructions that a computer follows to complete a task or solve a problem. An algorithm is the plan, and code is how we tell the computer to carry out that plan using a program

4 classes.
Learn to think like a robot. Robots and computers follow a set of instructions that a programmer writes. Before writing the code, programmers first make flowcharts, a diagram of what they want the robot or computer program to do.

Theme: Algorithms are everyday step-by-step instructions
Learning Goals:

Define what an algorithm is

Identify algorithms in real life (e.g., making toast, brushing teeth)

Practice writing instructions in logical order

Activities:

Warm-up: “Robot Instructions” game (give instructions to a partner)

Mini-lesson: What is an algorithm? (with kid-friendly examples)

Worksheet: Sequence scramble (fix out-of-order tasks)

Group activity: Write an algorithm for making a sandwich


Week 1: What’s an Algorithm?

Theme: Not everything is a straight line—sometimes we make choices!
Learning Goals:

Understand decision points (yes/no) and loops (repeat until)

Use “if/then” logic to create branching paths

Build a decision tree

Activities:

Quick recap quiz

Movement game: Follow if/then commands (e.g., “If I say jump, jump twice”)

Create a decision flow for choosing what to wear or what snack to eat

Introduce loops (e.g., “Repeat brushing until timer rings”)


Week 2: Thinking in Steps – Decisions and Loops

Theme: Turning algorithms into visual maps
Learning Goals:

Learn flowchart symbols (Start, Action, Decision, End, Arrows)

Use flowcharts to show how an algorithm flows

Practice converting step-by-step instructions into flowcharts

Activities:

Introduce flowchart shapes and what they mean

Show sample flowcharts (e.g., “Getting ready for school”)

Create a flowchart as a group: “Packing for a field trip”

Individual task: Create a flowchart for “Brushing your teeth”

Week 3: Drawing Flowcharts

Theme: Apply everything to a creative project
Learning Goals:

Plan, design, and explain a complete flowchart

Identify clear steps and decisions

Communicate logical thinking

Activities:

Review: “Spot the Error” flowchart activity

Plan: Brainstorm a custom topic (e.g., creating a game, solving a problem, planning a party)

Build: Draw or design the flowchart using symbols and arrows

Present: Share and explain your flowchart to the class

Wrap-up:

Certificates or badges of completion
