Thesis Papers Made Easy from a Humanities Honors Graduate

In this 6-week, twice per week course, high school students engage in fun, step-by-step activities that break the thesis paper into simple pieces (literary analysis, paragraph formation, thesis statement formation) to craft two papers.

Description

Class Experience

Students will learn how to read critically, how to analyze a text, how to form literary arguments, and how to create well-structured thesis papers on character and setting. Students will learn writing techniques that will improve all forms of writing and build confidence. I also promote the joy of writing!
Miss Sandra is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Humanities Honor’s Program. Her honor’s thesis won distinction as “The Most Outstanding.” She holds an MA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing from Chapman University. She has 20 years of classroom experience, teaching English, debate, social studies and math to 6-8th graders at a private school. She has tutored and mentored high school and college students. She is a USA Today bestselling author of fiction and has taught fiction writing workshops to adults. She founded and operates her own publishing company. Activities and assignments reinforce the techniques learned in class. After school assignments are designed to be short and effective. In general, students will have anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour of home-fun (not home-work) after each class. Two classes might require a 2-hour commitment each (over multiple days), but I am flexible and will work to accommodate students who need more time. Students will receive feedback and suggestions on submitted work, as this gives me a chance to aid each student's academic growth.
Students need a word processor to turn in typed assignments and have access to Google Docs. Students need access to a printer in order to print stories/assignments for completion. Thesis Papers Made Easy workbook will be made available in Google Docs. Writing tools and a notebook for taking notes during class discussions and lessons are helpful. Access to a good dictionary/thesaurus, such as Merriam-Webster’s free online dictionary and thesaurus or another collegiate dictionary.
Home-fun assignments will be returned to the students with positive, constructive feedback. I do my best to return work as expeditiously as possible. I expect work to be submitted on-time unless an extension has been requested and granted. I’m more than happy to work with students and families to adjust work when an issue arises. Just reach out. This class does not have any sensitive material. All short stories are in the public domain and are age-appropriate classic literature.
All stories used in class are in the public domain, but these will be available in Google Docs for student use.
