Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Delve into Chaos and learn the ordering of the Cosmos. This class closely follows Hesiod's Theogony, interpreting it line by line, deconstructing the gods he lists and their domains, specifically lines 1-120. Class will first begin with a short meet-and-greet. Once acquainted, we will delve into a dramatic telling of Hesiod's Theogony with a little bit of information from Apollodorus sprinkled in. The story will be brought to life through imagery, and as a story teller, my goal will be to use my theatrical and voice-artist background to make the tale memorable. Throughout, students will be encouraged to ask questions and will also be posed questions to test their listening and comprehension skills. Specifically, we will learn about all the Muses who sing these stories to mortals, origins of primordial gods like Tartarus, Ouranos, and Gaia, as well as the children of the very first gods that emerged from Chaos.
Learning Goals
Students will learn of Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Ourania, Calliope, Chaos, Ouranos, Eros, Gaia, Erebus, Nyx, Tartarus, Aether, Hemera, Thalassa, Pontus, Okeanus, Iapetus, Koios, Krios, Hyperion, Kronos, Dione, Tethys, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Theia, Rhea, Arges, Brontes, Steropes, Gyes, Briareus, Cottus, Campe, the Erinyes and Gigantes, Aphrodite, Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, Amalthea, Adrastia, Ida, and finally the birth of Zeus.
