Theatre for Kids -1 Day Introduction to Acting & Improv
Acting and Improv to develop creativity, confidence, respect and thinking on your feet ! (One-day introduction to my ongoing classes)
Class begins with physical and vocal warm-ups, so please make sure your learner can participate hands-free and has room to move!! After warming up we move on to a group acting game. Then we move on to specific improv and acting skills with exercises aimed at some of the basic concepts: listening, offering, accepting, advancing, chivalry, respect, raising the stakes, scene and story structure, silly characters or unusual settings etc. When class numbers allow, we'll break into teams and...
-Students will learn to focus their energy. -They will experience the importance of respect and teamwork. -They will build confidence and gain tools to deal with nervousness or shyness. -gain a basic understanding of improv and acting -get a sense of my other ongoing acting and improv classes Improv isn't fun because you are on stage being silly; improv is fun because when you come up with a new and spontaneous idea in the moment, and it works, you feel the instant thrill of success. You get a laugh from the group and develop new and deeper connection with your scene partner. My goal for every student is to have a chance to experience that moment.
I have been a professional actor in film and television for many years. I've travelled to exotic shoot locations, won awards, was a lead on five different television series. But none of that is what makes me a good drama teacher. So what do I think makes me a good drama teacher? Marvel. I never cease to marvel how much the techniques I learned in theatre school as a kid still help me to this day. I never cease to marvel when a child "gets it" and comes up with a new idea and is overcome with joy and pride simultaneously. This is the "magic" you hear us talk about all the time in film and theatre. And I am ever humbled by it. And as our children spend more time in front of the computer, I strive to give them a chance to experience that magic by transform that screen into a social, fun and interactive stage.. To see my professional credits look me up on the IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0941315/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
Students will sometimes be asked to bring an everyday item to use as a prop. Students will be given relaxation techniques and vocal exercises they can practice outside class.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
I make best efforts to avoid politics and religion but sooner or later a student will cast him or herself in the role of a religious leader or famous politician, or set a scene in a church or the Whitehouse etc. This is drama and make-believe and it is important to the process to let their imaginations open up. That being said, while I maintain a safe zone of inclusivity for all faiths and ideologies, hate speech, prejudice or cyber bullying will not be allowed and parents will be notified.
