Class Experience

Class begins with physical and vocal warm-ups, so please make sure your learner can participate hands-free and has room to move!! After warming up we move on to a group acting game. Then we move on to specific improv and acting skills with exercises aimed at some of the basic concepts: listening, offering, accepting, advancing, chivalry, respect, raising the stakes, scene and story structure, silly characters or unusual settings etc. When class numbers allow, we'll break into teams and compete in hilariously fun skit challenges (improv sports). With fewer students we will undertake the challenges together as a group. This class introduces your learner to my teaching style and my ongoing classes, "Theatre For Kids - 6 Week Improv Introduction" and "Theatre for Kids: Competitive Improv and Drama in a Fun Team Format."
Learning Goals
-Students will learn to focus their energy.
-They will experience the importance of respect and teamwork.
-They will build confidence and gain tools to deal with nervousness or shyness.
-gain a basic understanding of improv and acting
-get a sense of my other ongoing acting and improv classes

Improv isn't fun because you are on stage being silly; improv is fun because when you come up with a new and spontaneous idea in the moment, and it works, you feel the instant thrill of success. You get a laugh from the group and develop new and deeper connection with your scene partner. My goal for every student is to have a chance to experience that moment.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I make best efforts to avoid politics and religion but sooner or later a student will cast him or herself in the role of a religious leader or famous politician, or set a scene in a church or the Whitehouse etc. This is drama and make-believe and it is important to the process to let their imaginations open up. That being said, while I maintain a safe zone of inclusivity for all faiths and ideologies, hate speech, prejudice or cyber bullying will not be allowed and parents will be notified.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a professional actor in film and television for many years. I've travelled to exotic shoot locations, won awards, was a lead on five different television series. But none of that is what makes me a good drama teacher. So what do I think makes me a good drama teacher? Marvel. I never cease to marvel how much the techniques I learned in theatre school as a kid still help me to this day. I never cease to marvel when a child "gets it" and comes up with a new idea and is overcome with joy and pride simultaneously. This is the "magic" you hear us talk about all the time in film and theatre. And I am ever humbled by it. And as our children spend more time in front of the computer, I strive to give them a chance to experience that magic by transform that screen into a social, fun and interactive stage..
