1 hour per week. Students have one assignment. They are to finish the paragraph they planned in class by completing the planning brainstorm, rough draft, and initial revision. These are usually completed during class. Students who wish proofreading feedback from Miss Amy should submit a final draft to her through the Outschool interface within 24 hours of the class. The student will receive encouraging feedback through the Outschool interface within 24 hours. Students who have written paragraphs before may expect to spend under 30 minutes on the assignment.Assessment
Students who submit a paragraph to Miss Amy within 24 hours will receive an informal assessment.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 4
Students will practice the writing process while writing a traditional five sentence paragraph. Students will get to know each other and Ms. Amy as she leads them through how to plan, draft, revise, and publish a well-written food-themed paragraph. While this particular paragraph is opinion writing, the writing process and paragraph structure practiced would apply to all types of paragraphs -- persuasive, informative, instructional, etc. Students wanting personal proofreading feedback for their finished paragraph need to submit their final draft to Ms. Amy through the Outschool interface within 24 hours of class time. Encouraging feedback will be received within 24 hours. Students will also be encouraged to share their developing work within the class time and through the classroom chat. Ms. Amy will use a short lecture, slide show, Q and A, and example paragraph to teach the class. If time allows, Ms. Amy and the students will also write a paragraph as a group. Prior paragraph structure and writing process knowledge is helpful, but not required. Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate with the group in any discussions. This paragraph writing class can be used as a one-time creative assignment or as a foundational introduction to other types of five sentence structure paragraphs. Look for other paragraph classes from Miss Amy to further practice this core foundational writing format.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
I love teaching grammar and composition skills to students of all ages. When I'm not helping students write more effectively, I'm hosting book groups and book-related programs. I've worked as an elementary, middle school, and high school English teacher in several private schools. I've also worked as a children's specialist at my county library.
Society and social media don't allow much time for reflection before we write or speak, so the need to know and understand correct grammar and mechanics is vital for young students. Helping young children and young adults become effective communicators is my passion.
I also use book readings to help and inspire students. Reading and studying great books with my students gives them varied examples of correct writing. I have also found that reading together and discussing themes and characters builds their discernment and listening skills.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me quilting, playing my piano, or sitting on the back deck with my dachshund Maggie and, of course, a great book!
