This class will be an intensive writing experience where students will brainstorm a single story idea and develop it through a few weeks. The class will begin with students reading one of a few possible short stories based on their interests as a developing writer. Based on their response to the short story, we will brainstorm their own idea for a piece while offering advice and guidance on how best to pursue their literary instincts. Learners will then work on their story, and I will send...
Students will improve their understanding of the creative fiction process- they will learn the importance of reading other writers as a way to develop their own style, what kind of writing style fits them best, and how to use literary tools such as tone, mood, and metaphor to create beautiful worlds for their readers. These skills will also help students grow as readers and improve their skills in ELA classes.
Students will be assigned a short story to read at the beginning of the class. From there, they will be assigned a prompt to begin writing their story. Once the story is written, I will assign things to consider for future edits while they develop the story into its final form.
Students will receive an in-depth discussion of their strengths as a writer and how I would suggest that they develop their skills for future projects.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
