The Wonderful World of WHY: Ongoing Science Club

Why are sloths slow? Why do volcanoes erupt? Why are peppers spicy? Why do we sneeze? This science class uses “WHY” questions and conversation to explore biology, animal science, chemistry, anatomy, nature, space and more! (ESL Friendly)

Assessment
After every class, I will post a weekly quiz for learners to practice and reinforce the concepts taught in the class. These quizzes are optional and do not need to be handed in or printed.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Why does the moon change shape? 🌙 Why are peaches fuzzy? 🍑 Why do snakes shed their skin? 🐍 Why do we get hiccups? 🤭 Why do my fingers wrinkle in the bathtub? 🛁 Why can I see my breath when it is cold? 😮‍💨 Why do roses have thorns?🌹

Do you have an inquisitive learner that loves to ask..."Why?" This weekly science class will encourage learners to remain curious and use critical thinking to explore the world around them. We will meet each week to discuss “why” questions from all different areas of science. At the start of each class, I will present a theme and some “why” questions related to the theme. As a group, we will share what we know, make guesses, and learn the answers to fun and interesting questions. Learners will gain experience communicating their ideas and applying critical thinking skills to answer questions. Images and props will be used to enhance learning. After each class, I will post a short multiple choice quiz on the Outschool classroom page. This quiz does not need to be printed off or handed in. The quizzes are optional activities to reinforce what was discussed in class each week.

My teaching style involves asking questions to get the learners thinking before providing them with facts and answers. Discussion-based learning is what I strive for in each class. For this reason, I like to keep my class sizes small.

The 40 lessons in this ongoing class are taught in a continuous loop. Learners can drop in at any time. The lesson topics and concepts do not build upon each other.
Listed below are class themes with one example question:
