The Wingfeather Saga: On The Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (Once a week)

In this 4 week course learners will read the first book in the Wingfeather Saga. Each class will have group discussion and we will create a T.H.A.G.S. notebook which will include writing, novel elements and drawing activities.

What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Learners will need to complete the reading before each class about 10-15 chapters each week (as much as 85 pages). During class we will begin filling in the notebook, but that will need to be completed after class. Depending on how fast your learner reads: expect 2-4 hours of homework each week.
Assessment
Learners will be encourage to participate in the group discussion and to share their creative writing from the binder, but no formal assessment will be given.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
Join our On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness book study and work on your T.H.A.G.S. (the Three Honored And Great Subjects) just like Janner, Tink and Leeli. You probably have already read this great book (its so hard to put down once you start reading). But let's go a little deeper into this adventure with some great group discussion and make your own T.H.A.G.S.  notebook. This class meets once a week for four weeks. Each session you will need to read 10 to 15 chapters before class to be ready for the group discussion. During class we will talk about what we read, review vocabulary, have a lesson about a novel component (like character development, setting and plot) and fill in our notebook. The notebook will be a combination of  creative writing, story analysis and drawing.

-Write a song about the jewels of Anniera
-Create a comic book page about the events in the last section of the book
-Write what Janner would have written in his journal after learning the truth and reading his father's letter

Each learner will need their own copy of the Wingfeather Saga: On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness and a binder with the class printouts. Printouts will be provided in the classroom the Sunday before class begins.

Parental Guidance
The Wingfeather Saga is a series of fantasy/adventure novels. The story includes fighting and some characters die. There will be some activities where learners will need to use scissors to cut out paper.
