US Grade 3 - 4
This class will explore the adventurous novel of The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. We will learn about the themes, characters, setting, and even do a bonus author study where students will see how the author created the beautiful illustrations for the book. As Roz discovers the natural world around her, we will discuss questions and make inferences related to the story. We will identify the main characters and supporting characters, while making observations of how they interact with one another. Human-made vs. nature will be a theme that we discuss throughout the book. We will ask questions like "Can humans and the wild live peacefully together? Can we learn to adapt to our environment?" We will find inspiration from the novel to write an adventure story of our own. We will even write a book review and an alternate ending. My teaching style will be enthusiastic about the novel and encourage children to find a passion in reading such an incredible book. We will have discussion questions, comprehension questions, practice reading strategies, and they will have time to listen to chapters read aloud to them. They will need to own a copy of The Wild Robot. I will assign chapters to read after each class session. They will need a journal to record thoughts, responses, nature journaling, and creating their own adventure story. Students should be reading at least at a third grade level. This book is perfect for 3rd grade-5th grade, but students of many ages can appreciate it! Week 1: Introduction, Setting, and Characters Slideshow & Character Study (How Roz and the animals interact with each other on the island) Week 2: Write Your Own Adventure Story! Planning and publishing. Week 3: Book Review & Alternate Ending
Learning Goals
Students will explore themes, engage in discussion, and be inspired to write their own stories.

I’m a certified teacher in Elementary Education with my Master’s in Education Leadership, with experience in both in the US and internationally. My family and I had the privilege of living overseas for 15 years, teaching in international schools around the globe. I've lived in New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Bosnia and Herzegovina! I value teaching small groups, students from diverse backgrounds, instilling curiosity in my students, and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. Over the course of my 18 years in the classroom, I have gained valuable insight into best practices and ways to connect with learners. I strive for each of my learners to know that I care deeply about them and their education. Connection is the base for all authentic learning.
On Outschool, I am teaching an array of different classes: math camps, problem solving, traveling, book clubs, nature journaling, tutoring, choose-your-own-adventure, reading comprehension courses, and novel studies to list a few. I believe in smaller class sizes to ensure quality of education and engagement.
Outside of teaching, I am an avid long-distance trail runner, reader, and traveler! I'm equally passionate about all three. I love anything outdoors. Travel has taught me valuable life-long lessons that I love sharing with others. I have a teacher husband (also on Outschool!), and two young children that I adore.
