Class Experience

This class will explore the adventurous sequel to The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown. We will learn about the author, his creative process, vocabulary building, constructed responses with different types of questions (detail/inference, main idea/summarizing/theme, character/setting/plot/events, word meaning/figurative language, text structure, point of view, compare and contrast). As Roz finds herself among humans in this chapter of her life, we will be discovering new themes throughout this book, like motherhood, friendship, being different, conservation, and helping others.

My teaching style will be enthusiastic about the novel and encourage children to find a passion in reading. We will have discussion questions, comprehension questions, practice reading strategies, and they will have time to listen to chapters read aloud to them. They will have opportunity to share their ideas, observations, and opinions throughout the classes.

The class schedule will be as follows:

Lesson 1: An author study on Peter Brown
Lesson 2: Vocabulary building: analogies, synonyms, and sentence stems
Lesson 3: Constructed response: setting
Lesson 4: Create your own robot design
Lesson 5: Write your own robot story based on your robot design
Lesson 6: Discussion questions and themes study

Come join us in another exciting robot adventure with The Wild Robot Escapes!

I’m a certified teacher in Elementary Education with my Master’s in Education Leadership, with experience in both in the US and internationally. My family and I had the privilege of living overseas for 15 years, teaching in international schools around the globe. I've lived in New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Bosnia and Herzegovina! I value teaching small groups, students from diverse backgrounds, instilling curiosity in my students, and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. Over the course of my 18 years in the classroom, I have gained valuable insight into best practices and ways to connect with learners. I strive for each of my learners to know that I care deeply about them and their education. Connection is the base for all authentic learning.

On Outschool, I am teaching an array of different classes: math camps, problem solving, traveling, book clubs, nature journaling, tutoring, choose-your-own-adventure, reading comprehension courses, and novel studies to list a few. I believe in smaller class sizes to ensure quality of education and engagement.

Outside of teaching, I am an avid long-distance trail runner, reader, and traveler! I'm equally passionate about all three. I love anything outdoors. Travel has taught me valuable life-long lessons that I love sharing with others. I have a teacher husband (also on Outschool!), and two young children that I adore.
