During the next six weeks, we will take journey to an island only inhabited by animals and one wild robot. Learners will read and discuss "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown. This chapter book will help learners explore deep and meaningful themes and take away valuable life lessons. The first half of the class will be a read aloud, and in the second half of the class we will discuss the chapters. Learners will talk about visualization, theme, and connections that they make to the story. Learners are encouraged to think deeply. This story will build learners vocabulary and world view. Themes such as adaptation and family will be explored and learners will be encouraged to share any connections that they have to the text. I will do an engaging read aloud with dramatic voices, and lead a discussion. Learners will be encouraged to ask and answer questions. This book has deep themes and does contain the death of some animals. After each class, learners will have an activity to complete and bring to our next meeting to share! I provide optional projects for enrichment. They are not required in the class. Week 1 - Chapters 1-13: After Class Project: Using any materials you might find around the house, build a robot and bring it to the next class to share. Week 2 - Chapters 14-27: After Class Project: Using the robot you built or the printout provided, pick an environment and camouflage Roz to blend in to that environment. Week 3 - Chapters 28-41: After Class Project: Create a home for Roz and Brightbill using materials you have. Week 4 - Chapters 42-56: After Class Project: Using materials you have or the printout provided, build a bird that can fly. Week 5 - Chapters 57-67: After Class Project: Design a trap for a robot. Week 6 - Chapters 67-80: No Project. An optional Blooket will be provided so learners can answer questions about the book.
