Class Experience

US Grade
Beginner Level
There is a secret language in visual art that we call the elements and principles of art and design! We will play with materials and talk about what we created as we learn about the vocabulary and why it makes art so unique and interesting!

Using simple materials of markers, watercolor paper, water and brush, students will get an introduction to the elements of art. We will play with our materials to see what affects we can create, defining the creations through the vocabulary that all artists use, called the principles of design.

This is a sample of what we dive into in the Vocabulary of Art (Extended) course we offer on Outschool.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
With 15+ years experience as a teaching artist, Heidi Jeub has seen many learning styles, school "cultures", and methodologies in teaching art. She found that we often miss the lessons of Foundations of Art and Design because we become so focused on the product. She teaches this content emphasizing the language around the foundations, because no matter the age or ability of the student, the vocabulary is the key to truly understanding art making. The cool thing about the foundations is that it is the basis of so many things, like music, composition, writing, and STEM concepts.

Heidi Jeub is a nationally recognized arts leader, as a fellow with National Arts Strategies and Creative Community Institute from Springboard for the Arts. She is an abstract painter, bookbinder, and licensed arts specialist.
