WELCOME TO THE ULTIMATE VOCABULARY SHOWDOWN! This class is for students who fall into one of the following categories: a) Higher level readers who enjoy a friendly competition! :) b) Students who have completed my vocabulary series and are ready to test their knowledge of all the words we learned throughout our time together c) Students who are currently enrolled in my ongoing vocabulary course and feel ready to take the next step! ------------------------------------- *How will my child know what words to practice before the competition? Your child will receive all of the necessary study materials upon enrolling in this class. These materials include all 14 word lists with definitions and examples, a PDF version of my weekly lesson presentations, and the individual Kahoot game links to practice independently before our class begins. *How does the game work? Our competition will be held using the Kahoot gaming application which can be downloaded to any phone or tablet. If you do not have a second device, you can choose to use the same device you use for zoom and do 'split screen' for two windows. *What kinds of questions will be asked during the game? Questions will consist of multiple choice, true/false, spelling, and fill-in-the-blank. Double-point questions will consist of questions regarding synonyms and antonyms of the words. All study materials provided before the competition will cover the questions asked on the game, so there will be no surprises! :) *Can my child compete more than once? Mastery is great, however, improvement is the most rewarding. I encourage my students to join this competition as often as they would like in hopes of improving their overall score with each game. -------------------------------------- Students enrolled in this class are expected to study the course materials independently before our game begins. We will begin class with a brief introduction of the game rules and a quick overview of the types of questions that will be asked. The Kahoot game will begin once all students are logged in to the Kahoot game using a game code that will be provided at the beginning of class. Our 1st place winner will be crowned the ULTIMATE VOCABULARY MASTER and will be sent a personalized printable certificate at the conclusion of class. Their name will also be added to my Vocabulary Master leaderboard which is displayed at the beginning of each class. --------------------------------------- ***In my experience as an intermediate reading teacher, I have found that vocabulary varies from student to student more so than any other area of reading. For example, I have had 5th grade students whose vocabulary abilities reach far beyond middle school, and others who are still developing 2nd and 3rd grade skills. This is precisely the reason why I did not design this class to meet one particular grade level, but rather a range of intermediate levels to help fill in gaps from previous grades. This is also a great way to supplement any tutoring classes your child may be receiving.*** ***I have the class listed for ages 8-12 simply because those are the average ages of students who are in grades 3-6, however, it makes perfect sense that there are students outside of the age range that need support with vocabulary acquisition. If your child is outside of the listed age range but you feel this course could benefit them, please do not hesitate to reach out to me so we can further discuss how to best support your child's learning.*** --------------------------------------
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading comprehension and test taking skills by mastering 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade academic vocabulary terms. Students will become confident in their ability to read and understand grade-level words though interactive games.
