Description

Class Experience

At the end of this 12-week course, students will have advanced knowledge of stop-motion animation and editing techniques, including pre-production, production, and post-production.
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NYU-Tisch, and have been making movies with young people for over a decade. I've made (literally!) hundreds of short films with kids of all ages.
Please see Course Description for a day-by-day breakdown of work that will need to be completed at home.

POLICY ON WORK COMPLETED AT HOME
All Learners are expected to complete at-home assignments and turn them in on time. Timely submissions keep class costs as low as possible, because it prevents multiple logins to retrieve everyone's work. Work completed at home is used in class, so Learners who submit late work will not have their projects shared with their peers or be able to receive feedback on their movies. Exceptions open up a can of worms, so this policy is firm. Learners are encouraged to start their homework EARLY, as things can come up (wifi cuts out, computer breaks), and starting early means they can avoid a last-minute scramble to get their work in on time. This is great experience for Learners to build time-management skills and personal responsibility.
Learners will need the following items:

1. A Windows or Mac computer with the free HitFilm Express editing software installed. (Instructions will be provided.)
2. A phone or tablet with the free Stop Motion Studio app installed. (Compatible with Apple or Android devices.)
3. A tripod, grip, or homemade stand to hold the phone/tablet upright, in landscape mode (Google "homemade phone stand" for easy ideas)
4. Any brick toys or miniatures to use in animation
5. (If needed) An adult in the home who is proficient at tasks like uploading and attaching files, and available to help your Learner if necessary. Instruction will be provided, but some Learners benefit from additional in-person help when these tasks are new to them.

FAQ

1. Does my Learner need both Stop Motion Studio on a mobile device AND HitFilm Express on a computer?
ANSWER: Yes; both are free. Stop Motion Studio will be used to shoot the movies, but we won't be using its editing features. Instead we'll edit on HitFilm Express, which gives significantly more control, choice, and advanced capabilities.

2. I don't have a Windows or Mac computer. Can my Learner use HitFilm Express on a Chromebook, tablet, or phone?
ANSWER: Unfortunately, the free HitFilm Express software taught in this class is not compatible with Chromebooks, tablets, or phones.

3. Can my Learner do their editing work on a different software program?
ANSWER: It's strongly recommended that all Learners use the free HitFilm Express. We will be learning some very advanced editing techniques that may or may not be compatible with other programs, and will have a very different process on other software. Learners are welcome to use other programs if that experience works for them, but they will likely have an easier time if they use the software that is taught in class.

4. Can I take this class without the required technology or software?
ANSWER: You are welcome to take the class and use different technology, but Learners without the required tech may miss out on a portion of the instruction or participation. Learners are welcome to take the class if that experience works for them.

5. What is HitFilm Express, and why do I need it?
ANSWER: HitFilm Express is free, reputable video editing software that is easy to use and professional in quality. It is being used in this class because it has wide compatibility for both Windows and Mac computers, and is free.

6. My Windows or Mac computer is kind of old. How do I know if HitFilm Express will be compatible?
ANSWER: You can find the most up-to-date info on the specs needed to run HitFilm Express on their website: https://fxhome.com/hitfilm-express/specs#tech

7. Instead of the free version, should I buy one of the paid upgrades or "packs" on HitFilm's website?
ANSWER: It's recommended to choose the free version for the purposes of this class, as that is what will be taught. If your Learner loves editing and decides to continue doing a lot of it, you can decide later what kind of professional editing software to invest in. I am happy to make recommendations.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
